Afternoon’s End

This small African-American cemetery was once affiliated with a church-however once the decision was made to re-zone and extend the highway, the church moved. The cemetery is now located to a storage unit place, but is fenced off from the parking lot and building. Even with the rush of traffic in the background, it was still a compelling landscape to take in.

  1. Great image, beaut tree, Meg. I find it interesting that the powers that be will move the church and leave the graveyard. It takes things totally out of context and in a few generations what will people make of it?

    • Absolutely true Lee-but unfortunately for a lot of the African American cemeteries this was (and continues to be) a common enough occurrence- this particular cemetery had a recent burial as late as 2005, and there were a handful of good-sized family plots, so there may be future burials- in order to survive, many times these small churches must pull up roots and move on, leaving behind an important part of its history-in field surveys we are required to document all cemeteries or burial grounds no matter how small or modest with the hope that at the very least there is a written record of the burial ground-but that is often just not enough-
Thanks for looking (as she tucks her soapbox under her arm) and *listening*
