On the Street Where I Live #19

there is monkey grass everywhere-

Monkey grass is a very popular ground cover seen throughout the South. It handles the heat really well and does not need a lot of water. It even has these little purple spiky flowers that provide a punch of color when the gardens are struggling in the hot August heat. They line sidewalks, garden beds, and tree trunks.

  1. Very lovely and this is a great shot. I love the color and texture contrast. I’ve always loved the spiky wildness of this plant.
That being said it is an invasive species and will take over the area. We will soon be paying someone to pull/remove tons of this from our gardens as it is out of control.
The green variety is the worst. The variegated tends to clump more and is not quite so bad. You can thin it and it seems to stay put better.. Sorry to make this a science lesson, but you know me.. 😉

    • Wow! You do not see much of the variegated around here-and everyone has monkey grass in their yards-I have a little not much-that is interesting about it being invasive. Right now, I am contending with a morning glory invasion in the back that has been unrelenting!

      • Arrgh-we have made some progress, but it is ongoing-especially after all the rain we got the last few weeks-now they are everywhere 😦

      • I was given a book on Contemplative Photography at Xmas and the author said he spent a long time (can’t remember if it was 1 month, 6 months or a year) walking up and down the back alley behind his house, just looking, absorbing it. Then he started ‘seeing’ things to photograph. I see what you are doing with this series in a similar light.
