189/366 Tried and True

A staple of the Southern yard is the Crepe Myrtle–this is the time of year when the trees are blooming up and down the streets. You will see them in various shades of pinks and reds–maybe a white one will slip in here and there. I like them not just for their blooms but the amazing way their limbs twist and turn like small sculptures.

  1. Oddly enough we had this in our last yard here in sunny So.Cal and it was wonderful. The flower bunches wouldn’t last very long once cut but the whole trees would be covered and I’d cut some for bouquets when we went to the Redlands’ Bowl for free concerts during the summer. They last through an evening.

This was when I wasn’t working so I’d make a whole buffet with table, cloth, flowers and paper plates and feed who ever would show up. All the folks that had to work, would show up just before sundown, eat and we’d sit on the lawn with flowers and candles and wine. O for the good ole dayz. Too Old now, Too Hot now, Too Lazy to move now…even for a free concert. xxx ooo ~~dru~~

    • That sounds delightful dru-I bet those blooms made for beautiful accompaniment to the picnic meal-I try not to cut them too often because as you pointed out, the blooms really do not last long at all-we have these up and down the neighborhood street in various shades of pinks and reds. It is a beautiful sight during these hot days next to the big old oaks and magnolias-Thanks so much for visiting! 🙂
